JON + SANDY

TRADESMAN / HOME MAKER

Covenant Lot + Recycled House= One Happy Island Family

Back in the ’90s, Jon  and his future wife Sandy were next door neighbors on Madaket Road. Sandy lived with her parents, and Jon was a tradesman. They dreamed of raising a family and growing old together on Nantucket.

“We wanted our girls to grow up here, like Sandy did,” Jon said. “We were always on the lookout for a place to buy, but nothing was even close to our price range.”

Earlier this year, the opportunity to purchase land through the Covenant Program arose. Jon and Sandy jumped at the chance. They found a house that could be moved to the property. Now Jon spends his free time working on the renovations himself, with help from his network of friends.

“We love this community, and how everybody is willing to help as much as they can,” Jon said. “I’d like to give a huge shout-out to my employer, Carl Jelleme of Toscana Corp., for all of his help and advice through this process. We are so grateful to have a piece of Nantucket to call our own.”

The Covenant Program allows a property owner to split a parcel of land that otherwise would not be sub-dividable. A permanent affordability covenant is recorded on the lot, restricting ownership of one of the parcels to a year-round, income qualified household.
