House Recycling: Giving Nantucket Homes a Second Chapter

(February 2026)

On Nantucket, homes are more than buildings. They hold memories, routines, and years of life lived inside their walls. But as properties change hands and land is redeveloped, many small, structurally sound houses face an unfortunate end: the landfill.

Our House Recycling program offers a different path, one that preserves the history of these homes while helping address the island’s critical need for year-round workforce housing.

What Is House Recycling?

House recycling is exactly what it sounds like: relocating an existing Nantucket dwelling and giving it a new purpose. Instead of demolishing a house that no longer fits a property owner’s needs, that structure can be donated to Housing Nantucket, moved to our land, and transformed into stable housing for island families.

In fact, many of Housing Nantucket’s rental homes began this way. Scattered across the island, these recycled homes now provide year-round housing for people who work here; raising families, contributing to the community, and keeping Nantucket running.

Why It Matters

Building new housing on Nantucket is expensive, time-consuming, and often constrained by land availability. House recycling allows us to act more efficiently and sustainably by reusing existing structures that are already well-suited for residential use.

Just as importantly, it keeps viable homes out of the waste stream. Recycling a house is a tangible way to reduce environmental impact while addressing a deeply human need: stability.

For families living in temporary apartments or moving from place to place, a permanent home changes everything. It means kids can stay in the same school. Parents can plan ahead. Stress eases. Roots can finally grow.

What Types of Homes Can Be Recycled?

The ideal candidates for house recycling are:

  • Small dwellings (generally under 22 feet wide)
  • Less than two stories
  • Structurally sound and in good condition
  • Accessible from a paved road

That said, even if a home doesn’t meet our current needs, we encourage owners to reach out. In some cases, we may be able to find a new owner or future use for the structure.

Every situation is different, and we’re always open to a conversation.

A Meaningful Alternative

For property owners, donating a house through the House Recycling program can be a meaningful alternative to demolition. It’s a chance to see a home continue its life while directly supporting the people who make Nantucket a year-round community.

It’s also a reminder that housing solutions don’t always have to start from scratch. Sometimes, the answer is already standing… it just needs to be moved.

A Second Chapter

At its core, house recycling is about possibility. A home that no longer works in one place can become exactly what’s needed somewhere else. A structure with a past can help shape someone’s future.

If you’re in a position to donate a dwelling, or simply want to learn more about how the House Recycling program works, we invite you to reach out. Your unused home could become someone else’s long-term place to belong.
