Soon after Dwayne moved to the island in 2004 for work, Nantucket became a place he called home. He felt embraced by the community and considered himself fortunate to share housing offered through his employer. Inspired by the opportunities Nantucket gave him, he assisted others whenever he could.

But something was missing–his beloved daughter. Despite his best efforts, Dwayne was unable to find adequate housing for his family to live together under one roof. In a recent interview with Housing Nantucket, he reflected on the escalating housing crisis, a stark contrast to the Nantucket he knew upon his arrival. 

“Housing Nantucket provides for families, which is much different than just helping someone here or there,” said Dwayne. “Without Housing Nantucket’s assistance, I would not be able to do the work I do. If we don’t have people to live here, who is going to get the work done? The island will collapse. The people here in the community are what makes Nantucket, Nantucket.”

Dwayne kept trying. Then, this summer, a door finally opened. A family moved out of their Housing Nantucket affordable rental to purchase a home in the Sandpiper development. You may recall the story of Petar and Nadya, who moved into their new home in June. Their departure allowed Dwayne access to a 2-bedroom home, and his family could be reunited once again.
